“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with,” Jim Rohn. I read this quote on a career website the other day and couldn’t help but think how relevant it is to business.
If we think about this quote, it’s easy to conclude that this makes a huge amount of sense. The people you surround yourself with and interact with regularly have a huge impact on you.
As entrepreneurs, we are busy dedicated to the pursuit of actualising our vision. When we are busy entrepreneurs building a vision, time is one of our most important commodities. As such, we have to be really savvy about who we choose to spend our time with.
Building something from scratch can be demanding enough as it is and we don’t want someone who is going to drain our energy with a constant stream of negativity.
Instead, we want people who are going to push us to reach our goals, who share our values, who believe in our abilities and have the same drive and ambition that we do.
We want to be surrounded by people who cheer each other on and encourage each other to not give up, to keep pushing beyond what we initially thought we were capable of. Who share experiences, bounce ideas off each other and offer guidance when things aren’t going as expected. When surrounded by these people you begin to learn from each other’s mistakes and share each other’s wins.
When beginning your entrepreneurial journey, it’s a good idea to acknowledge that you become a product of the five people you spend the most time with. So choose your company wisely. There will be many people that will await your failure. Be wary of their presence in your life. Your goal is to develop a business that is committed to delivering awesome value to your customers, not proving these people wrong.
Gradually distance yourself from these negative people. Surround yourself with those who are like-minded and are going on a similar journey. They are people that will inspire you to be a better person, provide you with motivation to achieve your goals, empower you to succeed and cheer on your success.
Every great entrepreneur becomes successful because of the company he or she keeps. They will make an impact because a successful network who provides both inspiration and healthy competition.
Think about what you want from life and who you want to become.
If you want to grow as a person and make a difference in your community, you must constantly challenge yourself and surround yourself with remarkable people.
Think about what your goals are, and take a look around you.
Are you surrounding yourself with people who are supporting you to achieve your entrepreneurial vision?
