He’s one of Brisbane’s most celebrated entrepreneurs and one of Australia’s most passionate businessmen. His love affair with digital marketing and natural people skills have revolutionised the business landscape. His name is Llew Jury, and he’s the face behind the ever growing always changing Reload Business Group.
Llew has successfully guided the Reload Business Group from just himself and co-director Craig Somerville in 2008 to over 70 staff today. Along the way he has been awarded the Lord Mayor’s Young Business Person of the Year in 2012 and the Brisbane Business News Young Entrepreneur of the Year – Digital in 2014.
Llew’s vision has seen Reload Media attract and retain some of the very best talent and clients, demonstrated by Reload Media’s national award for Australia’s Best Customer Service in 2014.
I caught up with Llew before Christmas to find out what it takes to be a great leader and how to turn a passion into a profitable business.
Firstly, could you give a little background into your business and what you offer?
Sure, here at Reload Media we have a close-knit team made up of expert digital marketers. We specialise in Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), Search Engine Marketing (SEM), Social Media Marketing (SMM) and Web Strategy. We’re all about taking a truly collaborative approach with our clients.
Reload Media Group is known for its exceptional level of customer service. What the secret to great customer service?
We believe in a customer intimacy model where customers are at the core of our business. It starts with great customer service at all times. I’m privileged to be surrounded by very passionate people who care about customer service and are willing to better themselves. Passion and putting people first are key to exceptional customer service.
What does it take to be become successful in business?
My advice is don’t go looking for success. Instead, be dedicated and passionate about whatever you are doing. Strive to learn, work hard and set yourself ambitious goals. Success is about the journey not the destination. Be authentic, dedicated and humble and success will come.
What important lessons have you learned so far on your entrepreneurial journey?
A big one for me is people. The people you hire in your business are very important. Here at Reload Media, we have a great team of digital marketers who all share the same values. We hire our people based on their values and attitude. You can always teach the technical skills but you can’t teach attitude.
I’m also a firm believer from learning from your mistakes quickly, internally and cheaply. It’s important to make decisions, implement quickly, monitor the success or otherwise of the project and make improvements accordingly. It might not work the first time but using this process you can make small improvements that result in a win. To be successful in business you need to have more wins than losses.
Finally, I think family is important. It’s incredibly important to have life goals that align with business goals. It’s a marathon not a race and you need balance between your personal life and business. I have been fortunate to have a wonderful family that keep me motivated and grounded.
What advice would you give to anyone about to embark on their own leadership journey?
I think that it’s important to become an influencer, someone that understands the overall goals of a business and knows how to influence others to achieve the results of the business strategy. Leaders often think big picture, rather than day-to-day tactical. They’ll align their own career plans to their organisations strategic growth and enjoy slowly changing the business for the good of everyone.
And secondly, never stop learning. There will always be something new to learn, something to help you progress, something to help you move towards your goals.
LLew Jury will be speaking about his journey at the upcoming Agile Business Convention in Brisbane, on February 25th.
